Food Share Program Donates More than 1000 Pounds of Vegetables to Those in Need

August 13, 2011

Cornerstone MissionOn August 12 over 1100 pounds of fresh produce had been donated to or purchased by the Food Share program and distributed to low income people by way of the Food Bank, the Rapid City Food Pantry, Church Response (which shares what we bring them with Cornerstone Mission), and two groups that prepare and share food with the homeless.

This program takes unsold produce from the farmers markets and moves it to agencies and individuals who serve those in need. Market vendors all agree that they hate taking good food back to the farm and dumping on the compost pile. Food Share helps farmers and needy people alike.

Funded by the local women’s group Democracy in Action and the Ninth District Medical Alliance, Food Share collects cash donations at the Black Hills Farmers Market information booth. Anyone wishing to write a check should call Shirley Frederick at 348-0208. All donations are used to buy food. The workers are volunteers. We hope to raise enough money in August to keep the program going until the BHFM closes at the end of October.

For more about the program see the recent article in the Rapid City Journal.
