Dee Holmberg and Her German Customers
June 23, 2011
Dee Holmberg is a farmer, a cook, and a saleswoman who sells a lot of local food. The last time we stopped by her sales van, one of her customers sang the praises of her authentic German sausage. “It’s the best you can get,” he said. “I used to live half a mile from Eureka where they make it—Kauck’s processing plant. They’re good people.” Dee says they use all South Dakota beef and pork. As for cooking her sausage, the enthusiastic customer held up a package and said, “Fry that up, cut up some potatoes and onions and fry till they burn a bit and get a crust on them—that’s a good German dinner.”
In addition to sausage Dee sells corn-fed beef raised on her own farm, Dimock cheese “They’ve been in business since 1931” plus Hutterite smoked and regular chickens from Platt, raw honey from Rapid Valley, duck and chicken eggs from her farm, dog bones, and her own pickles, jellies, and jams. Later in the season she’ll be selling her own fresh produce.
Dee sells at the Rapid City Open Air Market across East Omaha Street from Roosevelt Park. You can usually find her red van there Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm.
