Established in 1931, Dimock Dairy is the oldest cheese plant in South Dakota. Dairy cows are not treated with growth hormones and cheese is free of fillers. In Rapid City, Dimock cheeses can be found at Don’s Valley Market, Smith’s Liquor Gallery, Cutting Edge Meat Market, and Dee Holmberg. In Sturgis, DakotaMart also carries Dimock cheese.

Dakota Rural Action, a statewide organization that supports local agriculture, is bringing its online year-round food co-op to the Black Hills area. The goals are to connect local producers directly with local residents, establish farmer-customer relationships, provide customers with accurate information about their food, and support local communities. The co-op was started last year in Sioux Falls and Brookings and is now being extended to residents of West River.
Here’s how it works: Anyone wishing to join pays a $53 lifetime membership fee, which is refundable if the purchaser leaves the state or chooses not to use the service. Members may buy, sell, or both. Purchases are made and paid for online. Purchases are delivered by the producer once a month to the drop-off location in Rapid City or Spearfish. Buyers may pick up in RC or Spearfish. Producers will be charged a 10% handling fee that is added to the price of the items. Customers will be charged a 10% handling fee plus sales tax. The handling fees cover the costs of managing the co-op. The co-op pays the sales tax to the state and sends a check once a month to each producer, who must reside in the state. Customers and producers do not have to be members of DRA to join the co-op.
Customers wishing to pick up in Spearfish may start ordering from the website June 1. The Spearfish drop-off will be the old farmers market building next to Crow Peak Brewery, 121 West Highway 14. The first customer pickup will be June 21 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. A drop-off site in Rapid City is planned for June.
